The birds see the reflected environment, such as trees and sky, and collide with the glass assuming it is a clear flight path. Any window, large or small can be a killer.
According to Dr. Daniel Klem of Muhlenberg College, “Intensive studies at single homes reveal one out of every two strikes results in a fatality.” He adds, “Glass is an indiscriminate killer that takes the fit as well as the un-fit of a species’ population.”
